Queen Emma
Adelheid Emma Wilhelmina Theresia , born at Arolsen on the 2nd of Augustus 1858, daughter of king George Victor of Waldeck-Pyrmont and princes Helena of Nassau, was since the 7th January 1879 wife (second marriage) of the 41 years older king William III. From this marriage, on the 31st.of August, their only child, Wilhelmina was born.
During the last days of the kings life (November 14th - November 23rd) Emma was acting regent. After his death she accepts regency for her daughter up to 1898. This could not have been easy for her, she was not trained, and a female monarch, which resulted in her acts being watched. At the start of her rule she took as little risks as possible.
By her dainty, and wise acting Queen Emma , since 1898 also named "the Queen-Mother", contributed a lot to the monarchy.. The nations sympathy expressed itself when her daughter Wilhelmina takes her place on the throne. Its a large sum of money, which Emma used to refurbish the her out-house in Renkum as sanatorium for tuberculosispatients. Emma died in 1934.
